It was an honour and a true delight to join Gina Gardiner on her
podcast, Leadership for Life, to talk about Lucy: Ultimate Survivor.
Gina’s focus on resilience and leading our own lives really resonated with
me—after all, Lucy is, at its core, a story of a woman who refuses to
give in to the forces trying to crush her spirit.
Lucy: Ultimate Survivor is my first
novel, and it’s one I’ve carried in my heart for years. It’s a work of
historical fiction, but its themes—abuse, injustice, courage, and survival—are
as relevant today as they were in the early 19th century. Lucy is inspired by
one of my own ancestors, and in writing her story, I wanted to honour the
strength of the women who came before us, often in silence, often overlooked.
Through Lucy’s journey, I aim to shed light on the reality of marriage as a
prison for many women of the time, and the wider, haunting presence of slavery
that shaped so many lives in Britain and beyond.
Being able to talk about this on Gina’s podcast—where the focus is on
how we can lead, grow, and live with purpose—was incredibly special. Lucy may
be a character from the past, but her fight is timeless. I hope listeners found
the conversation both inspiring and thought-provoking. There is so much we can
learn from the people who came before us, especially those who endured in the
face of impossible odds.
Outside of writing, I’ve spent much of my life working in the world of
business, and the lessons of leadership, resilience, and authenticity have been
constant companions. Now living in South Wales with my husband, I’m enjoying
this new chapter—one filled with stories, history, and the opportunity to
connect with readers and listeners in unexpected ways.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Lucy: Ultimate Survivor,
and to Gina for having me on her wonderful show. I invite you all to explore
Lucy’s story—and perhaps reflect on the powerful stories in your own history
too.
